An Incredible Gift from Nature
High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, near world famous Machu Picchu, are the Maras Salt Ponds. At 11,090 feet (3,380 meters) above sea level, these salt ponds were formed thousands of years ago when tectonic plates shifted, trapping a pristine ocean of 100% pure, mineral-rich salt under the Andes.
Ever since, hot salty spring water has been seeping out of this mountain in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and is diverted by the villagers into 4,200 salt ponds. These salt ponds are tended by 400 families from the local towns of Maras and Pichingoto, and are passed down from generation to generation.
When the brine evaporates under the intense Peruvian sun, workers scrape the light pink salt crust off, just as they’ve done for hundreds of years.
